Why I’m Fighting for a Plastic-Free Wales

Plastic pollution and discarded bottles on a beach, the inspiration for John Horan’s commitment to environmental action.

Our Welsh coastlines are more than just scenery; they are the heart of our communities and our heritage. Yet, witnessing the sheer scale of waste on our shores transformed my understanding of our environmental crisis from a distant headline into a personal mission. My journey toward plastic-free beauty and environmental action in Wales didn’t start with a policy paper—it started with a realisation that if we want to see systemic change, we must be willing to lead by example, starting in our own homes and our own kitchens.

The Wake Up Call

Every year, millions of plastic bottles end up polluting beaches and oceans across the world.

This alarming reality became deeply personal for our family during what was meant to be a relaxing holiday. Instead of pristine sand and clear shorelines, we were confronted with countless discarded plastic bottles and other waste scattered along the beach. Seeing this damage firsthand was confronting and heartbreaking — and it sparked a conversation that would ultimately change the direction of our lives.

Plastic Pollution Stopped Being Someone Else’s Problem

That single moment on the shoreline forced us to pause and reflect.

Plastic pollution was no longer something we read about or saw in documentaries — it was right in front of us. The impact on the environment was undeniable, and the threat to marine life was impossible to ignore. What struck us most was how normal this scene had become. Not just in one location, but around the world. It was clear that this was a global issue driven by everyday habits and convenience.

Looking Closer at Our Own Choices

As a family, we began questioning our own consumption. We looked closely at the products we used every day and were surprised by how much plastic they generated, especially in our beauty and personal care routines. Many beauty products are packaged in plastic and contain ingredients that are harsh on both the environment and the skin. We realised that if we wanted to see change, it had to start with our own choices.

The Beginning of Our Plastic-Free Journey

That realisation marked the beginning of our journey into plastic-free beauty care. We set out to create handmade products that were kind to people and the planet. Our goal was simple yet ambitious: to produce high-quality beauty care items that were completely plastic-free, handmade, and crafted with natural, safe ingredients sourced responsibly.

Making It by Hand From Our Kitchen

Our kitchen quickly became a place of experimentation. We tested natural oils, plant-based ingredients, and nourishing butters, carefully refining each recipe. Making products by hand allowed us to maintain quality, minimise waste, and stay closely connected to every stage of production. We also explored alternative packaging, choosing options like glass jars, metal tins, and compostable materials to ensure our products aligned with our values.

I share this not to preach, but because I suspect we are not alone. Somewhere along the way, many of us have had our own version of that beach — a moment that made the abstract suddenly real. If that moment has found you, too, know that the choices you make every day genuinely matter. Ours is a small contribution to a much bigger shift. But small contributions, made by enough people, have a habit of adding up.
