Meet John Horan

My backstory

I was born in Stockport in the mid sixties, 1965 to be exact.

I was raised there by my mother and 2 older sisters, through the hard time of constant power cuts, a 3-day working week and bad clothing.

I started my career in engineering with an apprenticeship run by the EITB in Middlesbrough in Teesside, I then travelled the UK constructing nuclear and Petrochemical facilities.

In my early twenties, I took the plunge to invest in myself and bought a hotel with my family in North Wales, which we ran for nearly a decade and loved being part of the community, taking an active role chairing the local festival committee, Multiple Sclerosis society and other charities. This is where we had and raised three wonderful daughters. They are all now grown up and in the teaching profession in 3 different subjects and fields.

In the mid nineties, I returned to engineering with a position heading up a mechanical division of a local Newport Electrical engineering company. I then moved to Newport in the early 2000s to manage the company to grow and flourish within the water sector, where I was especially proud of becoming a reliable, quality partner company with Dwr Cymru.

Also, not long after moving to Newport, I met my wonderful wife, and we still live locally in Always, Newport and have 3 grown-up stepsons, 1 happily married and 2 still in university.

I have always been politically minded and have had many differing views over time, but I would say as I have grown, my views have changed with the experiences I have had.

My backstory is not over, just heading into chapter seven.

A vision for Wales

“Wales has the talent, skill, and compassion to stand as an equal, independent partner — building a kinder nation where every citizen has equal worth.”

A vision for Wales

My top priorities for Newport & Islwyn

  1. To improve the aspirational education of all in Newport
  2. The improvement of primary health care, especially the lack of availability to see a GP for a consultation
  3. To ensure that women and girls are protected against violent and abusive crime and that this is promoted by our constabulary
  4. An improvement in the aesthetics of some of the areas of Newport & Islwyn to increase the well being of all its residents
  5. To stamp out the open drug peddling that is going on in plain sight on our streets

What I want to achieve as an MS

Primarily I would like the role of and MS to be respected and trusted by all, so I would like to be seen as trusted to carry out my allocated duties and responsibilities.

I would like to have contributed to the rebuilding of this respect and trust for the role of the MS by leading by example, by being open and honest with those people that put their trust in us to serve them.

I desperately want to influence the aspirations of our youth so they are not aiming lower with their goals than what they can achieve through hard work, good support and encouragement.

To assist in the maintenance of our National Health Service remaining free at the point of need.

Waste

Environmental change doesn’t have to be abstract or disruptive. Drawing on everyday examples, John Horan talks about practical ways communities can reduce waste and return to systems that prioritise reuse over convenience.

“I’d like to see us move away from single‑use plastics and bring back reuse — proving that practical, sustainable change is possible.”

Upbringing

John is a child of the 80's originally from Stockport. Rugby was no.1.

Aspiration for all

“We need to give universal opportunity and dreams to all — not just to those who can afford to see a different future.”

John Horan’s view on aspiration is rooted in the belief that ambition should never be treated as something to apologise for. Across communities in Wales, too many people grow up believing that aiming high is unrealistic or even unacceptable.

My commitments to you

If elected to The Senedd, I would be fully committed to serve as your representative in the Senedd, to always listen to your views and concerns and to feed back the truth even if it is not what is wanted to be heard.

I would work tirelessly, driving forward the commitments that you, the constituents of Newport & Islwyn, have instructed me to work on and to report back regularly on my progress on these commitments.

I will promise to remain independent of thought and always act in a manner that is to the collective benefit of all in our constituency and Wales as a whole.

I promise to always work in a collaborative, respectful and kind manor with others in the Senedd and not to be contra to other views just to make a point or political gain, but to listen and take other views on board.

I will also promise that I will always be there to call on for assistance if needed.

My commitments to you
